Going dow the rabbit hole that is Adam Sandler. Up to date, the only movie with Sandler in my memory is 50 First Dates. I love the energy he had in that movie, even while addressing a rather serious head injury. And might I just day, I quite enjoyed that movie. Drew Barrymore is fabulous and I wish knew more of her stuff. I used to be told that I look a little like her, hahahaha!
Anyhooo…. Diving in, first and foremost, lets go back to school hahaha

I am all for college humor and addressing richly-mcrichies sliding by in life with their friends. Just coasting and living off of the money their parent(s) earned. Even recently (like in the last decade or so) there was the scandal of rich kid’s buying their way into or through the better schools so they could continue the family legacy. I appreciate that even in the early 90’s this was addressed, comically or not, it clearly was relevant then.
The way they directed the speech pattern was a little confusing to me. You don’t need to have a speech impediment or a stutter to symbolize lower education. That just seems disrespectful to all those who do have difficulties with speaking. Personally, I regularly forget what word I am thinking of and either make up a sentence to around the idea, mispronounce words I am not familiar with, and consistently misspell words. For example, in one paragraph I misspelled “president” three different ways, twice in one sentence. If is wasn’t for spellcheck I would look pretty damn foolish. That doesn’t make me any less intelligent though.
Retake 12 grades, 2 weeks a piece? Oh man, going back to school and retaking all those lessens…It’s be like that show “Are you smarted than a 5th grader?” All these grown-ass adults not remembering facts taught so many years ago. Hell, if you asked 6th grade me what i learned in 5th grade the answer would be same as now: I have no idea, but my teacher was really great. Good for Billy actually sticking with it, and actually following through.
I appreciate a good stairway dance, with music or none. The coordination to not fall down, or up, the stairs is impressive. I have a hard enough time on my own. Like one time I fell down a flight of stairs and it could be heard outside the house we were at. One person said “it sounded like a heard of elephants.” Bruised my tailbone and I had to sit on a pillow for a. week. I was in high school and it was so funny. Friends never let it go.
back to school… OOOHHH that where that dirge comes from!! I have heard it before, but never knew the context. I have a adapted it to my work after breaks when I have to go back hahah “back to work…back to work…” heheheh Sometimes I sing it while I walk slowly up the stairs and return to my desk. I do love my job, and that I can work from home, but it can be real tedious and repetitive every once in a while.
Some good tangible lessons in growing up I suppose, and living up to expectations. I wish they had more realistic consequences for guy trying to steal the company, but for the movie length really gotta prioritize the scenes. Had digital film started yet, or was it still on the chemical film (develop in dark room then literally cut it together and hope for the best)?
Overall, a good intro to Adam Sandler and I look forward to more. He is a pretty good actor I think.

Hockey comedy?? hahah nope, golf! Shows you what I knew going in. Should have been obvious with the killer slap shots he was doing. Is this why so many hockey players enjoy golf in the off season? To keep their swing and flexibility in their shoulders? It’s not a bad idea if it is. Not to mention it seems like there is some pretty good money to be won if you’re good at it. Pro athlete in another arena, but why not earn some other money if you can?
I love that in this movie, they addressed that the rating for golf are usually pretty low. Like who actually watches golf? Other golf players that’s who. Like how did Tiger Woods get so damn famous and why did we all care about his personal life. No idea. I don’t get it. I appreciate that this movie takes that whole understanding, and makes a point of showing it a little. The working class person getting into the sport, makes it more “accessible” to the working class folks. Not really…but okay I guess? The marketing opportunities to use a colorful average Joe are endless.
All that said, Happy’s story would make for great drama and drive rating up so more watch the journey to win money for his grandma’s home. I believe this is the first time i have seen something where the main character shares their big secret with a love interest, and that person does not immediately turn around and share it with everyone. As a publicist, she could have very easily shared his story for the ratings. Plot twist, Happy tells it himself but that backfires it’s dickhead buying the house at the auction. So good on Happy, but sad for Grandma.
The fact that Happy earned enough money in one tour of pro golf really shows how much money and elitist culture there is. Like his caddy for instance, Happy picks the person who got thrown off the course because fuck those other guys saying he can’t be there. Dickhead can afford to spend sooo much money on the house and not even break a sweat is just so cringe. Especially now when buying a house is so far out of reach for the vast majority. The way Dickhead looks down on Happy is just so discouraging. It reinforces that there is some gate keeping going on around golf, its only for the rich folks who have hours to wonder around vast green pastures that would be better spent as housing area or parks, endless amounts of water to keep the lawns looking nice too. Stupid.
The whole situation with the “Jackass” sabotage did not really go anywhere. Dude paid no consequences for trying to sabotage his competitor. Aren’t there rules about that? There are in other sports, so does that support the popular feeling and acknowledgement that golf is NOT A SPORT. Whoever told it was lied to you.
Taking notes while watching I wrote “Happy place. uh oh” and I genuinely do not remember why. I do remember those trick shots were killer, bouncing off the rails and rolling down the pipes to get the ball in the hole and win.
Did subway sponsor the movie? Like really, did they? All of the product placement everywhere, there has to be a reason. You can’t just call out a company by name and show their brand on everything without some sort of support or marketing with that company.

Was what’s his butt from south park based on this character, or at least the speech/accent? They sound very similar but very different directions in character hahaha. I love the focus he has on helping others, with just the cluelessness that comes its being very sheltered. He is supposed to be a grown adult? He seems to either be a poor representation of neurodivergent folks, or just very very far behind in terms of book smarts. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either, but the way the character speaks does not need to be a tool/indication of either. You can be from the bayou, have an accent, and not sound like you need a little more help.
I appreciate that the coach and Vicky don’t treat Bobby like he’s anything less than a person. Like they don’t insult his intelligence, or talk down to him. I don’t care what is going on for a person, they should always be treated with the utmost respect and civility. His Mom…borderline child abuse… actual child abuse if he was a child… The amount of coddling and refusal to let him grow up and have a life. Then lying about his father. I get trying to protect your kid from getting hurt but there are limits, and that mama crossed the line in. my book,
I did turn on subtitles to figure out wha the other coach was saying, all it said was “speaking cajun dialect.” Wish that he was actually saying something, or that the subtitles said was it was. I love using subtitles. It gives me a chance go enjoy the dialogue more. Plus for re-watches, it is helpful to catch things I missed the first time. Also helpful for it other sounds are going on in the background, if I need to be quieter with my viewing, or my ADHD hahaha.
It’s the KFC guy!! Professor Colonel Sanders hahaha. I love that there is a not so subtle reference. I am not. a fan of the Colonel, but hey chicken is chicken.
Fuck ESPN. I have a personal bias against ESPN and their handling of my favorite local sport team. They are openly biased, and it they are not talking poorly about the team, they don’t mention anything about them at all. They are disrespectful to players they don’t like and show clear favoritism in their camera angles and replays.
